The Conran Shop closes Marylebone flagship and relocates head office

The Conran Shop has closed its Marylebone store and head office, after almost 30 years as it relocates its operations to Clerkenwell.

The luxury homeware retailer said the decision to close down the store it’s second ever branch – and relocate its head offices after 27 years came after the landlord sold the building to The Howard de Walden Estate.

The closure comes as the brand, founded in 1973 by British designer Sir Terence Conran, has been in the process of streamlining its UK retail footprint and restructuring the business amid falling consumer demand.

The Conran Shop, which opened at 55 Marylebone High Street in 1997, decreased the store’s shop floor last year from four floors to two.

Last year also saw the closure of its first-ever store located in Michelin House on Fulham Road in London’s Chelsea and the relocation of its Sloane Square flagship.

The business has now relocated its head offices that were based at the Marylebone branch to Clerkenwell, where it has also opened a new store.

The Conran Shop chief executive Peter Jenkins told Retail Gazette: “In 2023, we shifted our product strategy to focus on a wholly in-house design concept by our design team, TCS Studio, inspired by our founder Sir Terence Conran’s legacy and vision to make exceedingly distinguished design accessible to all.

“As a result of this new business direction, we are now operating in a less complex world, including a smaller retail footprint in the UK. We continue to streamline the B2C side of the brand whilst simultaneously look to grow our B2B operations in 2024.

“Although we are incredibly sad to be saying goodbye to what has been our home in Marylebone since the opening of the store in 1997, it’s been a wonderful 27 years.”
